Matt was keen to take control of his superannuation savings using a Self Managed Superannuation Fund (SMSF). But he also knew that due to his busy schedule, devoting the required time to manage a portfolio of direct equities may become difficult. Matt had been somewhat disillusioned with the financial advice process in the past and was sceptical about the tangible value that could be delivered by paying for ongoing financial advice.
He wanted to engage a financial adviser that did more than simply allocate his available funds on a broad asset allocation model and managed funds. Due to his vocation, Matt maintains a good understanding of business metrics and so he was keen to engage with an adviser who would take a proactive role in choosing specific investments for his SMSF portfolio.
In our initial discussions with Matt, we recognised that his primary investment goal with his superannuation was to target long term growth and he was willing to take a high level of short term risk in order to achieve this. This warranted some important discussions about the trade-offs between risk and return. An important part of our role to higher risk investors is to ensure that they understand the genuine potential for loss when taking risk. While higher risk assets tend to provide higher returns over time, it does not automatically deliver any particular outcome.
Importantly for Matt, from an engagement perspective and using our model portfolio process, we were able to show a tangible level of the investment expertise that he had been looking for.
After discussing the roles and responsibilities of a SMSF and ensuring that this investment vehicle was an appropriate fit, we arranged to establish his SMSF and roll-over his existing super. Following this initial process, we have now been providing advice to Matt for a number of years.
